Whipped Body Butter

Protect your skin and make it glow.

Every summer I make this whipped body butter for my family. It’s super rich and moisturizing, has nontoxic sun protection, and beta carotene to help with mild sun allergies. The addition of bees wax makes it thicker or thinner depending on how much you use, while cocoa butter helps your skin recover from over exposure.

Ingredients

As with everything you do, and where relevant: use organic, cold pressed, food grade, and/or locally sourced.

  • 1/2 cup of coconut oil (spf of 4-6)

  • 1/2 cup of shea butter (spf of 4-6)

  • 1/2 cup cocoa butter (helps over exposed skin)

  • 1/2 cup almond oil (spf of 4-6)

  • 1/4 cup bees wax (thickens the body butter)

  • 2 TBS Zinc Oxide (spf 2-20 based on amount used)

  • 1 tsp red raspberry seed oil (spf 25-50)

  • 1 tsp carrot seed oil (spf 35-40)

  • essential oils (I use peppermint and grapefruit)

  • a few drops of beta carotene from a supplement gel cap (just enough for a pale yellow tint. It makes your skin glow and helps with mild sun allergy)

  • if you want to take the glow factor up a notch, you can add a little mica in the mix

Combine everything, except the zine oxide, into a mixing bowl. Bring about 2 cups of water to a boil and place bowl over the water like a double boiler. Melt the ingredients together, occasionally stirring the mixture as it melts. Remove from heat, let it cool a bit, then add your essential oils. Place in the refrigerator for about an hour. Take it out and use your mixer to whip it for about 10 minutes, slowly adding your zinc oxide (careful not to breathe this in). Once it’s whipped, place it back into the refrigerator for a few more minutes, then you can scoop it into whatever containers you want to use.

When you’re cleaning up, use a little lemon essential oil in your dish soap to help cut the thick oils. It helps a ton.
